Are you thinking about potty training your baby or toddler? Not sure how to get started or at what age to start? Come to a Potty Time Workshop in Tokyo lead by Master Signing Time instructor, and mother of 2, Heidi! Two Little Hands, the makers of Signing Time, have put together a great set of resources to help parents, teachers and kids have a positive potty training experience. These are the foundation of the Potty Time Workshop.  Heidi's unique combination of information and humor helps set the tone for a positive potty training experience. There is no "right" way to potty train but she will equip you with various ideas so you will be able to find a style to match your child and your family.

Theme: Colors and Toys  色とおもちゃ

プレイ・グループは季節ごとに開催される、サインと英語を楽しむ集まりです。

Play Group is a seasonal event, a chance to gather with other signing families.

Who is Play Group for? どなたが参加することができますか？

ベビー・サイニング・タイムクラスの生徒さんや卒業生にとっては、

クラスではカバーされていない新しい内容を学べるという利点があります。

サインをやってみようかと考えている人にとっては、サインを使っている家族の人たちと話したり、サインを使っている赤ちゃんや幼児を目にする機会となるでしょう。

どちらかで既にサインを学んでいる方ももちろん大歓迎です。

Baby Signing Time students and graduates will learn signs not covered in the regular course.

Those who are interested in signing with their child will get a chance to see how other children are able to communicate both with sign language and Japanese/English.

Families who have studied on their own or in a class elsewhere are welcome to come and enjoy spending time with other ASL-based signers.

Fight the Flu with Signing Time!

Ok, so Signing Time doesn't give out flu shots but it does have a very important tool for parents that can help to prevent catching to flu.

Have you figured it out?

It is the song "I Wash My Hands".

A common suggestion for avoiding the flu is to wash your hands with soap and water for about 30 seconds.  While that sounds simple enough, do you know how long 30 seconds really is?  

Little kids in particular have not yet developed a reliable sense of time.  One handy trick is to have kids sing a song while washing their hands. 

When you sing the first verse and chorus at normal speed it takes about 30 seconds. Another great point is that the lyrics of the song include suggestions of appropriate times to wash hands - a great reminder for kids and parents alike!

 Let Alex, Leah and Hopkins help you and your family to remember how long to wash hands!

Books that Enhance

One of the great things about using ASL (American Sign Language) as the basis for signing with children is the wealth of "extra" books that you can use.  Since it is a real, full language there are new books constantly being made and many great ones already published.

The Baby Signing Time, Signing Time and Potty Time Board Books are currently hard to get your hands on in Japan.  However, I can take orders for them.  The other books can be purchased via Amazon.co.jp

Potty Time Success Chart

Miss Mega, my toddler, is loving her Potty Time Success Chart! 

She filled it up today :-)

You can download your own Success Chart for free from the Potty Time homepage.  I have a penchant for laminating things so of course ours is laminated so we can use it over and over again.  Pair it with some sticker's your child loves and you're ready to go!

Potty Training Corner & Books

Today we had the first Potty Time Workshop and I think it went rather well.  It was an interesting time of sharing ideas and stories.  One thing we talked about today is how to set up the potty area so all the things you need are within arm's reach.  Here is our little set-up:

The top pocket is where we keep the books to read while waiting.  There is also a pack of flushable wipes.  The second pocket has clean diapers and on the bottom liners for cloth diapers hang next to the paper towel for cleaning up accidents.

Potty Time Workshop

Next week we will have 2 Potty Time workshops at Hana House.  The first is on Tuesday, March 13th and the second is on Saturday, March 17th.  I am leading the same program on both days.  This workshop is a chance to learn about different options in potty training kids.  There are so many ways to do it: starting from birth or when a baby can sit alone or starts signing or turns a certain age... This workshop will encourage and equip parents to make potty training into a positive experience for both parent and child.
