The Signing Time Dictionary is a great starting point. Rachel's explanations make it easy to remember the signs and the tape on her fingers help to see how the fingers are positioned.

Signing Savvy is a great site with an easy to understand dictionary as well as various learning tools. It is worth becoming a registered guest even if you are just starting out. 

Life Print is another favorite resource. The variety of resources and detailed explanations are really great.

Treeschoolers 1-9 Overview

Two Little Hands, the people who brought us Signing Time, have outdone themselves with the new, crowdfunded series Rachel and the Treeschoolers.  Each episode includes key scientific concepts thought through songs, signs and all kinds of fun. In my classes the topic of color signs usually brings up two topics.
 - At what age can infants/toddlers distinguish colors?

Children develop the ability to distinguish colors as they grow. They also are learning the names and groupings of colors as they grow. This is not a reason to avoid using color words but instead a reason to include color words and play in daily life. For bilingual/multilingual children in particular they need the guidance of an adult to know which color names apply to which colors in each language. For example, in English the sun is yellow and the "go" light is green but the same sun is red in Japanese and the "go" light is blue.

 - Do we have to use the finger spelled ABCs?
When I talk to those who are new to signing I often get a reaction like "finger spelling is too difficult" so they won't even try. Yes, like any language, learning to communicate in a new way can be challenging. However, kids can learn the words, even finger spelled words, when given the chance. One segway into fingerspelling is using initialized signs such as the signs for many of the colors.

Good Night Moon

In Advanced Class (Red Class) today we read a classic book.
Goodnight Moon おやすみなさいおつきさま was written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. It was first published in 1947. Since then many families around the world have enjoyed reading it at bedtime.  My favorite edition is the cloth book.
Did you know there is a companion book called My World?

There is even an ASL signed edition. Here's a preview:

Goodnight Moon ASL is part of the Storybook Treasures DVDs series. This box set is region 1 (US/Canada) so if you want it be sure you have a DVD player that can play it such as a region free DVD Player.

Out this week! Rachel and the Treeschoolers Awesome Animals

New episode of Rachel & the TreeSchoolers: AWESOME ANIMALS! Science, sign language and songs for preschoolers.

Treeschoolers is a unique series which incorporates various educational approaches to make learning both meaningful and fun. While aimed at preschoolers toddlers and grade schoolers enjoy it too. In our house some the music of the Treeschoolers is often requested for our kitchen dance parties!
This episode takes a look at what animals are and how they live.  The songs will help kids to remember the things they learned. The signs add a unique interactive aspect.
